BOBBY WATCHED THE CONVOY exit the gates and wondered what was going on. They looked ready for a war. As they turned left, only one target he knew of came to mind. They were going after Jin, and from the looks of the vehicles, forcibly.

“We have to warn the townspeople,” he said to Myron. He flew down the stairs and through the door, aware Myron was falling behind, but he had no choice. His friend had to keep up or catch up. Bobby didn't have time to wait. Lives depended on him.

He kept sight of the convoy as long as he could before veering away from the main road. He ran hard but settled into a steady pace, knowing he had about two miles to cover. He passed numerous vehicles but didn't want to take a chance on checking them for keys, fearing he’d come up empty and lose precious minutes.

He estimated he'd covered about three-quarters of a mile when the sound of a fast-approaching car startled him. Lost in thought, Bobby didn’t hear it coming. He cursed himself for not staying more alert and for running down the middle of the road. There was no way whoever was coming hadn't seen him.

Bobby darted right and dove headfirst over a tall row of hedges. He hit the ground hard, his legs dragging through the branches. He winced as they ripped through his pants and carved small furrows in his shins. He bounced and rolled, getting to his feet as fast as he could, rifle up and ready.

He was about to peek out at the vehicle when someone called, “Bobby. Hey! Quit messing around.” He recognized Myron's voice and stood with the rifle still poised. “You're wasting time. Get in.”

Bobby worked to quell the pounding in his chest. He limped around the hedges. Myron flung the passenger door open and Bobby got in. “Asshole! Scared the shit out of me.”

“Sorry. I was just trying to help.”

“I almost shot you.”

They moved down the street.

“Sorry. Thought you'd rather ride than run all the way.”

Bobby caught his breath and leaned against the headrest. “Yeah. Good idea. Thanks.”

They drove for a few minutes, and Bobby directed Myron to the town. They came to an intersection and Bobby got out. He took out the glasses and trained them down the road. He was six blocks from the town’s entrance; three blocks farther down from where they were before. Unless the convoy approached from a different direction, they’d beaten them there.

He motioned for Myron to get out of the car. Myron shut down the engine and they advanced on foot through the yards of the houses to avoid being spotted by the guards. They covered three blocks when Bobby extended his hand. “Get down. Here they come.”

They flattened on the ground between two houses and watched as the first truck drew level with them and slowed. At first, Bobby feared they'd been seen, but the truck paused and turned toward town. The second truck followed, but though it made the turn, the third truck with the top gun stopped.
